Coastal Wanderer Poncho

Living on the coast in Sydney allows me the absolute privilege of wandering along the shoreline whenever I feel the need. The soothing sound of the waves, the taste of the salty air and the sea breeze caressing my skin is the perfect medicine if I am feeling tired or blue. Then there are the days that I meander along the cliffs watching out over the winter seas for the yearly whale migration. Although our winters are mild compared to some places it is always nice to have a lovely woolly wrap to keep me warm on my walks and this is how The Coastal Wanderer came to be. But instead of a wrap I turned her into this fabulous poncho. Evoking the hues of the sand and the sea using the magnificent contrasting colour and faux cables running horizontally, she really is a beautiful poncho. But imagine her in hues of seafoam green, soft blues, and deep oceanic purples the possibilities are endless. Alternatively, you can create her using just one colour she will be just as stunning. The Coastal Wanderer Poncho is wonderfully versatile and can be worn three different ways.

Then there are the days I meander along the cliffs, watching out over the winter seas for the yearly whale migration.

Our winters are mild compared to some places, but it’s always nice to have a lovely woolly wrap on those walks, and that’s how The Coastal Wanderer came to be. Instead of a wrap, I turned her into this fabulous poncho.

Sand, sea and faux cables

Evoking the hues of the sand and the sea, with a contrasting colour woven through faux cables that run horizontally across the body, she really is a beautiful poncho. Imagine her in seafoam green, soft blues or deep oceanic purples; the possibilities are endless. Or make her in just one colour and she’ll be every bit as stunning.

Worn three ways – over the shoulders, off to one side, or with the split at the front.
Faux cables, no cabling – separate crocheted bands are woven through openings in the fabric, giving the cable look with simple stitches.
Three sizes – 14–16 (18–20, 22–24), easily adjusted up or down in multiples of 7 stitches.
Finished with a shell border and a tidy join-as-you-go seam along the top.

The pattern is written row by row in US terms, includes a photo tutorial for working into the “third loop” (the stitch that makes the cable openings), and full instructions for the bands, the bottom shell border, blocking and joining.
