intricate, cozy look of traditional Fair Isle knitting, but honestly, I am way too restless for
all that 2 needles yarn work. My solution? A clever crochet hack! By utilizing the
waistcoat stitch, you can mimic the beautiful, dense texture of knitted fabric. The result
is a fabulous beanie that not only looks like classic colourwork but is also fully reversible
—meaning you get two charming, heart-and-flower-themed looks for the effort of one.

Forget the knitting needles. The Hurdy Gurdy Hearts & Flowers Reversible Beanie is here to prove that crochet can be just as gorgeous as Fair Isle, and for Kathy, a whole lot faster.

This project was a labour of love (and impatience). Kathy has always adored the intricate, cosy look of traditional Fair Isle knitting, but is far too restless for all that two-needle work. Her solution? A clever crochet hack. Using the waistcoat stitch, you can mimic the beautiful, dense texture of knitted fabric. The result is a beanie that not only looks like classic colourwork but is fully reversible, so you get two charming heart-and-flower looks for the effort of one.

Two hats in one

Worked from the crown down in continuous rounds, the beanie starts in one colour with the motifs in the contrast, then swaps: the contrast becomes the main colour and the motifs flip. Fold it either way and you have a rust hat with blue hearts, or a blue hat with rust hearts.

Waistcoat stitch throughout – the crochet stitch that looks knitted, ideal for charted colourwork.
Fully reversible – no wrong side, no lining, two looks.
Three sizes – small, medium (60 cm head circumference) and large, by adjusting where the increases end.
Charted motifs – hearts and flowers worked from a graph, with tips for keeping your colours from bumping into each other.

What you’ll need

Yarn2 skeins of 4 ply superwash, one in each colour (sample: Gingerbread Man and Peak Hour)

Hook4 mm or 4.5 mm pointy-head hook; go up to 4.5–5 mm if your tension is tight
