A cute little Fair Isle cowl to surprise your friends with when you tell them it’s crocheted.
Meet Icy You. When Kathy packs for winter holidays she loves to take her handmade scarves, shawls and beanies, but there’s never quite enough room in the bag. This fabulous little cowl is just the thing: brilliant warmth without the bulk. Made from 4 ply merino, it’s light but oh so warm.
Worked in waistcoat stitch, the crochet really does look knitted, with three colours weaving through bands of diamonds, flowers and zigzags between neat ribbed edges. As a bonus, the exact same chart can be knitted.
Fair Isle, the crochet way
- Three colours, one chart – a 12-stitch repeat that’s easy to follow and easy to resize.
- Three sizes in two yarn weights – small, medium and large, with starting counts for both 4 ply and 8 ply.
- Worked in a spiral – no visible join, finished with post-stitch ribbing at both ends (start or finish with the rib, your choice).
- Kathy’s waistcoat-stitch notes – hook placement diagram, why to go up a hook size, and keeping your tension loose so the next round works in easily.
