In the middle of Mallee Highway, on the banks of the Murray River, the night sky does something magical. It was 3 a.m. one July morning in the tiny town of Tooleybuc when I first saw the Milky Way in all its glory. What I saw took my breath away: a brilliant, shimmering ribbon of light, like a million crystals cast across the dark. The vibrant, mesmerizing colours and distinct crescent sweep of the galaxy stayed with me, inspiring the form of this shawl.
Milky Way Rising is created using Assigned Pooling yarn. The unique way the yarn is dyed allows for the random colour pops. As the colours appear so do your “Assigned stitches” Because the stitches are dictated by the colour pops in the yarn, each placement is beautifully organic—perfectly mirroring the random, scattered beauty of the stars above. Milky Way Rising is made with assigned pooling yarn. The unique way the yarn is dyed creates random pops of colour, and as each one arrives on your hook, so does your “assigned stitch”. Because the popcorns are dictated by the yarn, every placement is beautifully organic, perfectly mirroring the scattered beauty of the stars above. No two shawls will ever be exactly alike.
A crescent full of stars
- Crescent shape – worked from a magic circle outward in herringbone half double crochet, with the increases written row by row.
- Assigned pooling blossoms – make a popcorn wherever the accent colour appears; Kathy’s slightly different popcorn makes them pop, with a photo tutorial.
- A band of openwork near the edge, then a shell border and a crab-stitch finish to tidy the ends. Or stop before the shells; it’s lovely either way.
