There’s a special hush that falls over the world in winter, a kind of quiet that wraps around you like a blanket — soft, still, full of breath waiting to be released. That hush was the beginning of the Winter Song Cowl.
Winter song was inspired by my cousin who sings in a choir often outdoor and in winter. When it was her birthday I pondered for weeks about what to make for her, she is also a nurse practitioner, so I was tossing up between something medical themed or music themed, as you see the music theme won.
With that decided and after her watching her rehearse a pattern began to form in my
mind and was drawn, it was then that I sat down with my yarn and hook, still hearing the wonderful echoes of the choir. I chose a rich, pure merino that reminded me of candlelight and cathedral windows and began working a rhythmic stitch — something that pulsed and flowed, almost like sheet music.
Each stitch followed a beat: a rise, a fall, a quiet pause — just like the phrasing of a song. I worked in rounds, thinking of the beautiful harmonies that I had just experienced. The pattern that evolved became the Winter Song Cowl, a beautiful accessory for her winter wardrobe and the perfect size to keep her warm without the bulk of a scarf or getting in the way.
